Pitaya or strawberry pear or dragon fruit is a whimsical looking fruit grown all over Asia, Latin America and other tropical countries. The fruit belongs to the cactus family and comes with a white or deep pink flesh, the outside it has a bright magenta skin or yellow with soft green thorns. The inside can vary from white flesh with tiny black crunchy seeds or neon-psychedelic Barbie pink. In terms of taste its fairly bland almost like a kiwi but way less sweet. Pitaya is rich in immune boosting vitamin C, iron, beta carotene, lycopene, prebiotic, other vitamins, minerals and is mildly laxative.
The growing popularity of this beautiful fruit has lead to the farming them in the United States bringing the price of the fruit a bit down. I found this at my local grocery store on sale and had to snag one of it. To extent the fruit I blended it with banana and other fruits to make a smoothie.
You can also buy Pitaya frozen packets and freeze dried powder if finding fresh fruit is difficult. I like this and this brand. Not sponsored!
