If you’ve followed my blog for a while you’ve probably noticed I post recipes made with locally grown sustainable ingredients as much as possible.
Occasionally I’ll buy exotic ingredients, açai being one of them. I first had it in Rio Brazil, where açaí bowls are local favorites and made popular world wide. Açai is a tropical fruit from the Amazon, it’s extremely fragile and rarely found fresh. The only forms I’ve seen are frozen puree, blended juices and freeze dried. If you want to make smoothie bowls or other recipes look for unsweetend and preferably not blended with other fruits or hidden sugar.
Trader Joes in the U.S stock excellent quality unsweetned and reasonably priced( not sponsored). Açai is a great source of anthocyanins an antioxidants and fighting free radicals. Anthocyanins may offer anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-cancer benefits.
I make Acai smoothie bowls quiet often specially in the warmer months as a refreshing healthy breakfast, I find homemade nicer than health food/juice bars where it tends to be very sweet at least for my taste and economical of course.
To make açaí not as sweet I balance the banana which is normally used as a base and the main sweetener with frozen cauliflower. Cauliflower has a bland taste and clean texture and provides body and does a great job reducing the sweetness. Trust me you will not taste it at all.

This recipe was SO GOOD. Great job. I added about a half cup of stevia because we like things extra sweet. I’ll be using this one for breakfast
